Is there any way to prevent parvo. I had 4 pups 2 that were 5 months old and one 3 months. All had shots and raised off ground only out some when i feed but never before shots. Any way the 3 5 month olds were litter mates and 1 was in a diff pen is fine and the other 2 and the 3 month old all died yesterday and im pretty sure it was parvo. Dont understand how u put all this money in them and them die and a mutt can have 13 under the house and raise them all.

Some people won't like this but, I have had parvo before and the best thing I have had luck with is to treat my dirt pen with red deisel 2 or 3 time a year(spring , summer and fall ) and the off ground kennels with strong bleach water or even straight bleach when empty.

Joe is right here I've got a uncle that is a vet and they say if you have parvo once it will lay dormant in the ground for several years not sure what kind of shots you use but i used to work at a feed store and they sold parvo shots there they were useless the parvo vaccine is a live virus and is supposed to be kept cold and the guy that used to deliver them would take off from over in Arkansas early that morning and make his rounds over into Oklahoma making deliveries before making it to us late that evening so i know some of that vaccine could not be any good we go to the vet here and get a parvo vaccine here the vet told us the vaccine is insured if a dogs dies the company will pay you for it haunt had a puppy get parvo since we started using it has several different doses you got to give at different times but well worth the money

yeah might be worth checking.into the guy when he delivered ours had them in a Styrofoam cooler but he drove around all day with them in the back of the truck so i just didn't trust them that's when i started using the shot from the vet

I am sorry for your loss. I also lost the pride of my kennel this week. I had waited 3 years to make this cross she had 4 beautiful pups . I vaccinated them at 7 weeks old and again at 9 weeks old the next day they were all dead .I also had given a shot to an 8 month female that was doing great, the next day she was dead. I have been trying to figure out what happened. I don't remember when I had parvo around here. I was told 2 things not that I believe or agree with ,but I am wondering. He said if the temp of the vaccine gets above 55 degrees it can be dangerous to the pups.. Is this true? Second the same guy told me there is a new strain of parvo that just blows in and regular vaccine doesn't work. He called it Parvo II . I believe he said it came from Ohio.. Is this true? I know one thing alot of people Have had trouble raising pups this year... I keep my kennels sprayed regularly, I use half and half bleach and water. They are all above ground and I also spray the ground. I do not understand. I lost 5 fat pretty pups.

I've got two sick right now. I bought them three days ago. I noticed one didn't have much of an appetite the first day. Now one is about dead, and although the other one is still eating, I doubt either will survive. I assumed they had been vaccinated since they were four months of age.

Everybody does this different but the way I do mine is my pups start getting shot's at 4 weeks old I give them at 4,8,12,16 and time there eye's are open I worm them once a week until they are 12 weeks and never had any trouble and I wash my pen out with 100% bleach after every litter.

You can beat Parvo with Tamiflu. See http://www.johnkoerner.org/SportingDogBlog/parvo.html

It is best to order your vaccines from a reputable company (I prefer Jeffers Pet & Revival Animal Health) or purchase them from a vet. Vaccines from Farm supply stores & coops are notorious for killing pups, whether this is due to the vaccines being poorly handled or something else is not known.

There are many theories, here are a few I have heard:
*Pups caught parvo FROM THE VACCINE ITSELF
*Pups caught a new strain of parvo
*The pups never received immunity to parvo from the vaccine (it never took)
*The vaccines were poorly handled

I have also seen where the 7-in-1 and 8-in-1 vaccines killed pups. I prefer the 5-in-1 vaccines for any puppy under 12 weeks old.

like i was saying earlier guys stay away from the feed store shots im not going to name the company we got ours from when i worked at the feed store but they wet a very reputable company around these parts but anytime your dealing with a live vaccine and its being hauled around in the back of a truck all day im just not going to take any chances cause if that vaccine gets to hot it becomes useless might as well give them a shot of water stick with the shots from a vet there handled alot better and like i said the ones i get from my vet are insured and the company will pay you for any dog that dies if they were treated with there vaccine might check into it guys

As a matter of fact I did use 7/1 called First Companion. Co. is from Grapevine ,TX. ,But this was manufactured by Boatringer co. in St. Joseph, MO. . This is the first time I have experienced this problem. I surely bought an expensive lesson. I usually use straight parvo the first 2 times and then use 7/1 or 8/1. I wanted to use the best because I wanted these pups so much. Didn't happen..

Years ago I bought 2 12 week old pups on a Friday night, Took them to the vet the next morning for their shots. That Sunday night both pups were gettin sick, so I took them to the vet Monday evening after work. Both had Parvo. The vet saved one. They hadn't been vacinated at all, but no other pups in the litter got sick. I'm assuming they got it from the shot.
They were only in a small corner of a carport, so I bleached it down real good. An old timer told me to spread Hydrated Lime over that area, & put more gravel down on top. This lime is different than the agriculture lime, I am told. But I got it at a grain co-op. I don't have a kennel there, & have had no probems since.

7 in 1 has lepto vaccine in it and i have heard this can kill a young pup. I use 5 in 1 till they reach 12 week old then i use 7 in 1. A person will probably never have parvo if you keep strangers out of your kennels, they can carry this stuff on their boots from one kennel to the next. Always wear boots or shoes around your kennels that never go off of your place. If you buy a new pup or dog put it by itself away from your other dogs till you know it isn't sick.
