I have convinced my wife to let me breed my gyp. I'm a guy that does his homework and I'm not in a hurry, she's 2 and I will probably wait awhile. This breeding will be for my own personal use but I only plan on keeping 1 or maximum 2 pups.I have been extremely happy with my dog so far. I am interested in trialing and I will probably enter her in a few after this hunting season. I'm not a dog breeder and I'll have limited chances at breeding her b/c we only have so much room and time . So with those goals in mind the question is do you go back to a dog of similar breeding maybe even distantly related? Or do you outcross and take a chance to get rid of a few of her weaknesses. She's not perfect but her strong points are she's clean running medium speed handles extremely well and hunts within a range I'm comfortable with. I have killed about 25 over her by herself this year. Her negatives are she's a bit soft ( probably my fault) she just doesn't burn down the briars like some dogs Iv seen. She gets in there and jumps rabbits especially if she winds one she's all in but I wish she stayed busier. Last negative is she's a bit independent (also my fault)She doesn't pack well with new dogs or if you put her down with a bunch.

He hasn't been trailed any but throws excellent pups I breed a bitch to him last year all pups I believe are gonna be above average. Mike Grubbs is the owner look him up on Facebook and see for your self willie has power and brains with plenty of foot and gears he's an outstanding hound. If he was trailed hands down he be hof a few trailers bought pups off of me hopefully they will do great can't wait to hear back

If you are interested in trailing in NC you need to decide what kind of trials you are wanting to compete in. If SPO, I would find a good Black Creek that is run in SPO. If NKC Progressive Pack, consider a proven full Weir Creek.
I think I need to attend a few before I make a definite decision. I would think I'll be trialing SPO the closest clubs are tar heel beagle club and quail farm beagle club. That would be where I'll probably go. I wish there was something a little closer I would join in a heartbeat.

I would breed back to the Weircreek blood. There are a couple of guys in this group that have Weircreeks that lives in NC.
I will probably do that. I am kind of looking for a specific hound to go look at and watch. The breeding thing is tricky, I really believe it's more than putting two good hounds together. I want a hound that is going to improve some of her weaknesses but also shares some of her strength. I want something I can be competitive with in the field hunting and SPO trial format in that order.

I have never bought anything off of Tim but looking at many of the post on this site he comes highly recommended. I have my name in for a pup as soon as one is available. This is his website. http://www.akcweircreekbeagles.com/6.html
I bought the gyp from mr Khal as a puppy so I am somewhat familiar with the kennel. You won't be sorry if your dog turns out like the one I got.

Typically in NC the Weir Creek influenced dogs trial in what is called Progressive Pack

so are you saying if I plan on trialing SPO I should look for something a little different and if I decide to stick with the PPO format I should add another shot of weir creek? Just for my sake would you suggest a stud that would make her offspring better suited for SPO? And maybe also suggest one for PPO. Thanks for your input.

Also aren't the progressive pack dogs a little rougher and not as tight on the line as SPO? I would say even though my dog is weir creek bred she's slower and easier than most of her kin. She's really fairly conservative. But that might be an exception not the rule.

There are medium upper medium and fast weir creek dogs. There are also tight to the line and heads up running rougher weir creeks. The old blood weir creek seems to be the more medium speed tighter dog like the ones from hogtown beagles in AR. The more recent weir creek dogs are faster and rougher. I've been looking into the line with a buddy of mine for our futures and they come in all styles. Watch the dog and his kin run if you can and pick one that compliments your female in the format you want to run regardless of weir creek or other. You're right in saying PP is faster and looser than SPO.

Zabrown7, you are right the SPO here in NC will be more of a conservative dog compared to PP. I've been told the Mid-West SPO format is comparable to PP here. As far as naming a dog to breed to then expect the offspring to fit in a certain format I can't do that. I say place the dog in what format it is comfortable in. Like you said your dog is more conservative and she maybe the one in that litter that SPO suits her.

I plan on trying SPO if it Isn't a good fit thats no problem she still has features I want in a gundog. I would probably keep her and breed her any way. I would just want to pick a stud that would better equip her offspring for the format i am interested in running. I see you are in North Carolina do you compete in field trials? If so are you a weir creek guy?
