I got a 16 gauge Sears Model 14 single shot bolt action between 10th and 11th birthday. It is within 3 feet of my as I type this. My mom was apposed to me having my own gun. Dad reconciled it with you can have a gun when you can pay for it. Every day after school and on Saturday I picked cotton. Picked it clean I think for 3 cents a pound. After the cotton season ended, I had I think $16. The next Friday I announced that I had $26 and the above shotgun was $24 at the local Sears store. Saturday into town we went I had enough to get the gun and 1 box low brass #6's. Dad did not ask where I got the money. All the deal was I had to pay for it and I did.
The next day after Church, we were eating Sunday dinner and my mother said. You should get your bike and go riding with Gary Allen ( the closest neighbor ), I saw him riding a bike yesterday and it looks just like yours. Dad looked and me and grinned.
I sold dressed squirrels for a quarter a piece to pay for my shells.

410 bolt action with a tube feed, it was my grandfathers gun that he got as a child, still have it and it will be going to my grandson when he is of age, I hopefully will be around to see him kill his first rabbit with it over my hounds someday. I am 60 and got it when I was 11 used to squirrel hunt with it , you could knock them out of the tall beach trees for sure, dang where do the years go

Most of yall are a good bit older than i...

How much was a box of shells back then if you could buy a shotgun for 20 some dollars??

How about a puppy or a started dog??

I think I paid anywhere from $1.25 to $2.25. Canuck was cheap higher in wound be Peter's or High Brass Winchester. I paid $10 for a finished birddog in late 60's

I started with a Winchester 1200 in 16ga used it a couple year and sold it because it was too heavy. Got a single barrel H&R 16 ga used it a few years and sold it. Got a remington 870 wingmaster 12ga still have it but don't use it anymore. I got a 20 ga 870 express youth gun with a 18 inch barrel that is real nice too carry. Them youth guns are nice when you get old.lol

That blows my mind!! But you think about how much pay scale would have been in those days ....it makes sense...
