Earlier today i was letting my hounds HC and Nola Mae run loose awhile like i do every day.I notice them messing with something and i checked them out.YEP they found a rabbit nest close to the yard.3 were left unharmed and .a couple were dog treats unfortunately.I covered the nest back with hopes of them making it.They had hair but were too small to leave the nest.A couple hours later i was going to cover it with something while i let some dog loose but the nest was uncovered (not dug up) and the baby rabbits gone. Now this was close to the house in the middle of the day.No dogs running loose.Do you think a mother rabbit will move her babys or something just got them.It was only 30 yards from my mt currs so if a coyote or fox or cat etc got them i would think my currs would have barked.Irritates the hail out of me.All they needed was a week or so and theyed made it.Theyed already survived freezing weather and torrential rain and two c o o n hounds.I dont see how a nest ever survives.

Google says this.(photo)Id like to know what got them in that short period of time and not be noticed.A bird of some kind? Youd think it would be something that could smell.Ive not noticed any cats around.hed be dead if i did.Its a mystery to me.Be different if it was over night and further distance from the house and dogs.It was only 2hrs or less that id put it back together.Anyway theyre gone.Probably the last rabbits i had.lol

Didn’t know a box turtle would eat them. I’m guessing a box turtle is what we locally call a terrapin.
What dont eat a rabbit.lol.Ive seen a big rat snake already. No telling how many they eat every summer.Hate to kill rat snakes.Theres alot of rats that need eating.Rats probably eat rabbit nest.

Years ago I was riding back from running hounds with a couple of guys. When the driver ran over a box turtle, the other guy with us asked him didn’t he see the turtle? The driver replied, “yes, those things eat baby rabbits”. Lots of beaglers think that, but I would like to have actual proof.

Crows are probably the biggest predators of early rabbit nests. They search for nests, and are very smart about investigating any shred of fur that might be nest lining. Rabbits often choose terrible locations for nests - right out in the open, and as soon as the babies emerge, crows are watching for them. I have seen crows fly off with little rabbits many times through the years.

There is a reason Rabbits are the sustenance of so many other animals. Turkeys, Owls, Hawks, and on and on.

Here is why.

"One breeding pair of rabbits – and their offspring – can create nearly 4 million rabbits in only 4 years!

As prey animals, reproduction is the rabbit’s only defense against extinction. Females are able to conceive at about 3 months old. Their pregnancies last around 30 days. Mother rabbit can be impregnated again just moments after giving birth! A female rabbit can have one litter of babies per month!"

My input:
The Buck rabbit can smell when a Doe is about to give birth. If he is on the ground and the Doe is in a cage, he will start hanging around the hutch a couple days prior to her birthing. If you see a couple or more rabbits running across the lawn, you can bet there is a Doe who has given birth or is about to give birth.
My wife and I, while living in North Mississippi, where there was an abundance of Cottontails, counted 13 rabbits running around our back yard one day. It was like a train of rabbits as the Bucks chased each other.
