looking for a new cold weather hunting coat.I currently have a mule front loader game coat and it is tough but the weight of the coat alone makes my shoulders ache after a 5 or 6 hr hunt.Looking for something with quilted liner not fleece or flannel and prefer shell loops.Any suggestions

Windy I don’t know if they still make or have available but I wear a carrhart hoodie full zip and layer under it with my vest over. My old Browning hunting coat hurts my shoulders after 2-3 hrs also. Has to be extremely cold to wear it. For turning briars that Mule is great tho. I have thot about getting the heavy mule briar shirt a size bigger and wear it as my outer layer. I wear a mule hoodie w my mule bibs. Hoodie has briar proof sleeves. Layer up under depending on temperature.

I too layer up under my Mule jacket the light weight slick kind not the heavy canvas type mule.
I have a heavy zip up sweatshirt and a light zip up sweatshirt I wear under depending on the day. Then just a light hunting vest over the jacket. Jacket is water and wind proof.
Its the gun that hurts my shoulder. Sucks getting old!

My favorite cold weather coat is an old carhartt cb036 coat. The only negative was the zip on game bag. No longer available. I think there are very few who make hunting coats these days.

Years ago I bought a big Dan's briarproof coat. Its warm but with Tennessee winters the last few years I hardly ever wear it. Down side is, by the time you factor in a pocket full of shells and 2-3 dead rabbits it can be heavy.

Early season: T shirt with mule briarproof button shirt, and a cheap lightweight vest

Late Season: T shirt, hoodie, and mule briar proof shirt on top with a vest

(Rare)really cold day: hoodie with dans jacket or hoodie with mule briarproof jacket and light vest.

I just saw this 1/4 zipp on Dan's thinking about ordering me one. Can wear the briar proof vest over. Santa gets himself gifts sometimes.

I also have an old Wick briar proof coat that is lighter than the Dan's, but it doesn't have a game bag.

I like my Dans hunting coat, It is much lighter than most hunting coats and does not soak up water like some do. I bought mine big enough to be able to wear a hooded sweat shirt underneath. I wear a Dans shirt with a Dans vest in warm weather. I wear Dans overalls also. Dans hold up over the years.

It never gets cold enough for me to wear anything but my carhart coat it’s lined but not too heavy.I can put my hand in my pockets and wade through about anything South Arkansas has to offer. I just wish it had a game bag.

I like Dans hunting coat. I bought it big enough to add layers. It does not absord water and wind does not go throught it, nice collar to keep wind off the neck. I was a little worriied about the lining but after five years or havent had any problems.

I wear a medium-heavy coat and have a fluorescent type shoulder strap hunting vest. The vest is light, easy on and off, doesn't weigh down your shoulders like the jacket. JMO

I have taken an old tree stand harness strap , put three snaps in it and on the inside of the coat about at the waist. If the game bag ever starts getting heavy I can snap the strap to the inside of my coat and put it around my waist. Kinda like a waist belt for a pack. Takes a lot of strain off the shoulders.

If I shoot my limit I take them back to the truck or hang them in a tree and get them at the end of our hunt. I like hanging so fleas leave the rabbits.

I walked 4 miles and 6 miles my last two rabbit hunting outings. Made a loop back to the truck. I ain’t backtracking that to pick up rabbits.

What are you hunting 1000 acre parcels? We hunt 20-30 acre swamps that keeps us close to the hanging rabbits and the truck. We move from swamp to swamp in the section so it’s a no problem retrieving rabbits. Works great! Dogs go into the swamp jump a rabbit we let the dogs run 1/2 hour or more then try and position to cut it off. Walking is minimal, dogs jump the rabbits. JMO

We have multiple 2000 to 8500 acre WMAs within a two hour drive. Lots of ground , rabbits are spread out though.

Same here Matt. If I hung in a tree that’s where they would stay. We put aprox 15-20 mi on dogs and about 5-6 on boots. Ain’t backtracking.
