First encounter of the year with coyotes

This evening around 6:30pm my little Bluetick opened up louder than ever and a hot chase started pulling in the pack. I walked to a high point to listen to a loud chase, my four hounds were singing some mountain music. I was leaning against a telephone pole and something caught my eye to the left but I didn’t see anything. A minute later I see a coyote go by. I run down the little patch of brush and there is three coyotes standing listening to the hounds. 75 yards and all I have is my EDC, Performance Center M&P Shield with 8 rounds, they had no idea I was there. Unload 4 rounds, I don’t know how close they came but I know I missed. They took off like lightning. I called the pack off and decided I had enough excitement for the night. I just caught a glimpse of that coyote in a small clearing. I got lucky. I won’t be running them without some more fire power for a while. I figure either my .223 bolt or an AR. We will see.
Those coyotes had food on their mind because this was the second chase and I had been there making noise.
I hate those stinking coyotes

Yeah, Coyotes sure take the fun out of running rabbits. I lost two pups about 7 months old, last year .

Man I’m glad the coyotes in my area get run by hounds all the time. When the coyotes around home hear a dog open up they are getting out of dodge. We have a pile of em but they have never messed with me while running my beagles. I did however run up in the mountains of Tennessee with my good buddy Codycmk last year and we had one up the hill just a couple hundred yards start howling at our beagles while they were blistering a rabbit. Gave me chills

I bought a 5000$ thermal scope this year because we’re all sick of them too. Built an AR with a 24 inch bull barrel and dropped a 3 lb timney trigger in it. I put it on a tripod when i run at night now and keep an eye on things. Killed 1 so far while

Wow DTA69 that’s a nice set up.
I plan to talk to the land owner to get permission to trap it this winter. Until then I will have something that can reach out farther than a compact pistol.

Yeah it’s a pretty fun toy. I still can’t believe my wife hasn’t covered my face with a pillow while I’m sleeping for what i spent on the whole thing. But we have a ton of coyotes also. I had 3 packs howling at us last time i was running at night. Me and the dogs right in the middle. I have to much invested in my dogs to have them get killed. My friend lost a really good cur dog last fall. It was pretty gruesome what those coyotes did to him. Since i got the thermal i’ve learned a lot about how smart they are. They lurk in tree lines and watch from a distance. Many times i can just see their faces from several hundred yards away. Watching.

I know my wife would have smothered me, lol
I learned a lot about coyotes travel routes and their stealth from trapping them.

This is just one reason we need to fight to keep our AR rifles that the Biden administration wants to take away from us.

Nice setup he has, but it doesn’t take an AR to kill a coyote.

I see coyotes every night on my trail cameras. Sometimes 4-5 at a time. Occasionally see them in daytime. But I have never had a problem with them as far as the hounds are concerned. Probably the pack scares them off, but running in daylight only helps too. Most of the people who get beagles attacked are running one, two, three hounds at night in spring/summer when the coyotes have their puppies.

I had them stalk my beagles - with me in the field!!!! My mentor who started us in beagles over 25 years ago, said that if you do a combination of bells and lights, it confuses the coyotes because coyotes 'pattern' their prey. So this time of year, I'll have some dogs with bells and some dogs with solid lights and others with blinking lights. I figure the more psychodelic my back looks - the less likely of an attack....how it doesn't make the dogs dizzy is beyond me!

Doesn’t take anything more than a bb gun to kill a rabbit either. But i bet you don’t hunt with one.
When you have a dog worth a couple thousand dollars get it’s nuts ripped off and killed by a pack you might feel different. I’m not sure what you’re getting at by saying it Doesn’t take an AR. What’s it any of your concern what other people use to hunt with?

Nice setup DTA69 . One of my friends went to a thermal scope last year . He did very good with his red light also , but he likes his thermal better . His was over $6000 dollars . I am not into it at that price yet and I don’t have a wife . This is my light setup .

How do you like that clamp on your tripod? I’d like to use a couple other bolt guns i have but my setup has a smaller clamp that attaches to a piece bolted directly to my mlok handguard.
