Switched from Victor Hi pro about 2 months ago to Joy super meal. At first I thought the dogs were doing ok on it but in the last two weeks I’ve started to see some signs of it not being what I want. Dry flaking skin, hair loss( and I don’t mean typical shedding) dull lack luster coats. I’ll be going back to my original choice of feeds and no matter the cost I’ll not stray from it again. My dogs are more than dogs to me, they always give me their best so I’ll give them the best.

The skin/hair issues you mentioned may not necessarily be from the food. Like everything else, you usually get what you pay for with feed, and most of us balance trying to get as much quality possible at the lowest cost. A lot of people like both feeds you listed, though.

Have you wormed your dogs lately?
The reason I asked, I got a male from my friend. The dog was in good shape and then started losing weight. I doubled his feed and no improvement I mentioned it to my Buddy and he said he had problems with Whip Worms. His Vet had prescribed Fenbendazole. So I went to a farm store and bought Safe Guard and gave him the three doses as prescribed. Immediately the dog started gaining weight and returned to his normal energy level. Then I wormed the other beagles and another that was gaunt started gaining weight.
It saves feed, and with the price of feed, we don't want to feed parasites.

I started a regiment of fish oil pills to the dogs and the flaky skin and hair loss started to go away in about a weeks time. That tells me not enough omegas in the feed. I worm dogs monthly so that’s not an issue for sure.

I have had a similar problem with skin issues. Found that higher protein is the issue with my dogs.

Jim
I’ve fed 30/20 to all my dogs FOREVER. They run year round so therefore I feel they need it. They see 50-60 miles per week in the off season and 100 plus during season. The skin issues are a first for me and didn’t show until 2 plus months of feeding Joy.
