I know a guy who used to keep both in his kennel...Talked to him just the other day. Alot of that stuff is down here in the South, especially Mississippi and Louisiana. There's even some that breed both lines you're talking about if you look them up.

I'll be first to say, they're not my type of dog for the most part, but that don't mean I'm right, nor that they aren't any good...

He has always been sold on how well they hunt. They apparently hunt hard and have a lot of bottom as everyday dogs.
Are they gonna be on line when running? Not so much as a whole. Would be rougher than your average SPO dog now. They'll definitely have some foot for sure, and power....Both lines have a good deal (mosty) of hare breeding in them, so you're doubling up on all of the above.

Honestly, there was alot to like early on with Branko when they were close up to Dingus and maybe more importantly, Anna's Ann. Dingus wasn't a big speedster, but rather a gritty, medium, medium plus rabbit machine that didn't beat himself. Over the years, and chasing the trials like everyone does, I think they've sped them up to compete in large pack hare.

if you look back at the pedigree5,6,7,8 generations both lines were bred pretty similar…

I guess you’d have to ask yourself what you’re trying to accomplish…Will they hunt? Yes….Will they be wound tighter than a banjo string…YES…

Maybe some of the older guys on here that’s dealt with them some can comment too

Is Satsuma actually hare bred, or just really hard stuff? Mel Faust (Satsuma beagles) is from Louisiana, correct? I understand he used to travel up North to trial, but was he using bloodlines from up there?
not as much as Branko but look back in the old peds they were bred similar…I think most their stuff started with Mountaineer ?

I’ll look it back up when I get home and post it…I do remember Satsuma going back to Bannister 2-3 times where Branko didnt

Yes you will find Anna’s Ann in most all the true Brankos pedigrees if you go far enough back
Might even say Elmer Gray had a big part in the Branko line seeing how Anna’s Ann was heavenly influenced with Grays linesman Also had WC Boogie. And Banister in her ped. Brankos are some of the best line breeding going today

Remember that all Branko or all Satsuma hounds are not super fast. There are conservative (for large pack) dogs in each bloodline. If I would make a cross like that, I would be sure that I liked the style of both dogs and that both dogs were similar in style.

What Duke says is true that there are some from those lines more conservative than others, but neither kennel is known for being conservative overall. Even if you find one that is conservative, you are still breeding to the family, not the individual. If you like that more aggressive running style, then crossing Branko and Satsuma should give you that, but you should not make the cross and expect something different in the puppies.

In my opinion, the best advice given in this thread was Huntsman…

I’m paraphrasing but just because certain individuals from either line are have different characteristics than what is average for thst line doesn’t mean that’s what they’ll proDuce ….Thats the kind of advice you get from someone who’s line bred for thirty years and pretty much saw it all

Keep in mind that I mentioned some dogs being conservative- for large pack (hare hounds); Not conservative for SPO. You can find Branko and whatever else bred dogs that dont have enough to trial for large pack. That doesn't mean they will fit into SPO format. I have bred and bought several Satsuma hounds and am speaking from experience. Breed them and see whatcha get if you like both dogs.

I have outcrossed my Flat Creek hounds on Branko influenced hounds (LP World CH LPBCH LPRCH Greenwells Reggie), I have made this cross twice and the pups have extreme hunt run with power and more control than your typical Branko dogs. They have unlimited bottom and desire. I would love to try Flat Creek and Satsuma !!! If you have a good Satsuma male or Female, contact me and lets give it a try. The pups I have now the oldest ones just turned a year old and the others just turned 9 months old, and they flat out HUNT and Jump Rabbits, and run with Power and Control. They have beautiful conformation as well.

That’s about as completely different as two lines could be. Hybrids, for sure. The question you’ll have to answer is where do you go next? Back for more “Branko”, back for more “Flat Creek” or to something else? The F2 generation is where the wheels can come off if not careful.

The two females that I chose to outcross on have Trex on the bottom side as well
