Best shells

I was wondering what everyone's opinion was on what is the best shell/shot combo for rabbits? Both 20 and 12 gauge.

howards kennels 11-30-2013 03:45 PM

Winchester or Remington No. 4 or No.5

X2. But I like a 3" #4 in my 410 for rabbits.

twalling 11-30-2013 05:28 PM

I have tried many different loads and I like Remington shurshot heavy dove in 6's the best. Good load at a cheap price

alext4 11-30-2013 05:48 PM

6 lite loads

andy knox 11-30-2013 05:51 PM

20ga. remington express long range #6

RunEmDeadKennels 11-30-2013 06:12 PM

Remington pheasant loads 5s or 6s. I shot 4 rabbits with only 4 shots so far. 1 shot 1 kill!

hunterathart 11-30-2013 07:15 PM

swamp rabbits 4 shot heavy loads.

hekeim 11-30-2013 09:21 PM

I use a 28 gauge. 6 shot 7/8 ounce load

Beagle72 11-30-2013 09:54 PM

I also shoot a 28 guage with Winchester 5 shot

dogknott 11-30-2013 09:56 PM

7.5,1/2 oz, 410 reloads, works great

east-cincy beagler 12-01-2013 06:37 AM

I like 20ga #5 or #6 prefer the 5.

Silver Belly62 12-01-2013 06:39 AM

Prefer #6's in my 20's & 410's in Winchester/Remington. Started shooting Winchester 3"-3/4 oz #6's in 410 and really like them so far. Hate those shells that don't have regular brass, instead they have that cheap silver/aluminum end had some problems with them

X 2. And they don't tear the rabbit up as bad because they shoot slower.

jeffro 12-01-2013 08:50 AM

I like #5's in my 410.I don't like having to pick all that shot out of the meat.Dental work is expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best shell is the one that gives YOUR GUN the best pattern, because every shell does not pattern well. Shoot several different ones to see what gives you the pattern you want.

I use that exact load, 12ga in the past and now 20ga. I used a full choke and Imp on my 12ga, now use a Mod for my 20ga.

I have been hunting with a T/C 45/410 for the last 3 years and it likes 3" #6 as they seem to be different from gun to gun.

Thirty years ago I swore by IMP Cyl 12 ga with "Skeet" loads either 7 1/2 or 8's then I graduated to 20 Ga 1100 with a Rifle Sighted bbl and low brass # 7 1/2.
IMHO it does not take a lot of "Knock Down" to kill a bunny and most shots with Beagles are usually 20-30 yds.

Good Luck

Jim

In 12ga I like #6s full choke or #4s modified. I don't like picking the #7-8 shot out of the meat( or biting it). I also hunt a lot of row crops so there are many shots taken 35-60 yards out and full choke reaches out there to "touch em".

I use 20 ga Winchester super X # 6 shot.

I like #5 soft lead 7/8 oz 12 ga. reloaded with red dot. Very little destruction when used with ic.
